Introduction Down syndrome is a congenital genetic disorder characterised by a triplication of material on chromosome 21. It is associated with a number of medical problems, including cardiac defects, gastrointestinal anomalies, autoimmune and dermatological disorders, and a significantly increased risk of acute leukaemia (most pronounced in the under fives). (1) Additional but less well-recognised conditions associated with Down syndrome are periodontal disease and dental caries (tooth decay), both of which contribute to significant morbidity.
